CELEBRATING PEACE ICONS

The theme for this year’s Youth Peace Week from August 4th to 10th was “Whakanuia Rongonui
Mā, Teitei Mā, te Hunga i Hohou i te Rongo”, “Celebrating Peace Icons: Past, Present, and Future.”
Our theme honoured those who have made a difference and who show us that peace is about
justice, kindness, and respect. From peace icons who focus on areas from human rights,
education, to arts, this theme encouraged our rangatahi to think about leaders who prove that
no matter what age and stage you are at, you can change the world one small step at a time.
Last year Youth Peace Week reached an estimated 10,000 tamariki and rangatahi. We have
seen a fifty percent increase in figures this year, with approximately 15,000 individuals
participating throughout the week from across Aotearoa and abroad.

The Youth Peace Week toolkit is so beautifully put together. I am excited to see the students’ work on their peace icons develop, and students reflect on the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.”
